    Thinking about the lineage between Emerson to James to Whitehead. Emerson was William James’ godfather and good friends with Henry James Sr., William and Henry Jr.’s father. Emerson was a powerful influence on William James who, in turn, was a powerful influence, along with Bergson, on Whitehead. Seeking a cosmopolitics based on love and reverence for the Other brings the work of Emmanuel Levinas into the picture, in my opinion. Politics is necessarily linked to justice which becomes necessary when the “Third” enters the picture and extends beyond the wisdom of love that links the individual in fully responsibility for and obligation to the Other in the dyadic “face-to-face” relationship. Now, one has two “Others”, the Other and the Third each of whom make an Infinite demand.
